The SP and the SW

Today I received in the mail copies of the front pages and banners of two newspapers from the Shenandoah Public Library. The names of these two papers are (or were) the Tri-Weekly Sentinel-Post and the Shenandoah World (referred to as SP and SW respectively). Previously I had erroneously thought SP was the Shenandoah Post.

For some reason there is apparently only one copy of the microfilm for these two publications, and it is housed at the library. It is known colloquially as D645. Why the Mormons don't have a copy is a little strange. They seem to have just about everything else.

I have sent an inquiry asking how much it would cost to duplicate. If it's reasonable I may decided to fund multiple copies and give these to various libraries such as the FHL (Family History Library) in Salt Lake City and one or two in Des Moines. If I am ambitious enough and find funding other than just myself, I may provide more for institutions throughout Iowa and perhaps the Allen County Library in Indiana. (At least I can dream, can't I?)

All of this poking around is for my book on World War One.

P.S. All of these abbreviations remind me SJP, which is how one of my friend's refers to Sarah Jessica Parker. He is a little obsessed with her. In my humble opinion, she isn't attractive at all and her acting skills are minimal at best. Awhile back some magazine, People I believe, reported on a survey of men who ranked her as the ugliest star in recent memory. I wouldn't quite go that far, but she ain't no Ashley Judd or Daisy Fuentes.

Senator Gregg Comes to His Senses

I couldn't be Judd Gregg.” This pretty much sums it up, for Judd Gregg and conservatives in general. It is the headline for a Politico story on Gregg's withdrawal from Obama's cabinet.

Conservatives — the true limited government types — have been in the wilderness for a very long time, probably since the Age of Reagan. Dubya certainly wasn't one and his father Bush 41 was no Reagan. The Republican Congressional delegation through the years has constantly been seduced by the almighty pet projects and pork dollars which almost ensures victory in the next election.

Thankfully, Gregg realized he was a mere pawn in the Dems change and hope charade. Instead of transforming politics in that cesspool of D.C., Obama and his surrogates sold the American people on a sham. He is worse than our worst presidents because the likes of Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson never claimed to be above it all. Clinton came close to this self-worship, but Obama has outdone him at his own game.

The flowers are fading fast. That luster on Obama and his team seems to be tarnishing a bit. And I predict more to come.

“This song is for animal liberation!”

The world may very well be coming to end and deservedly so. A video with the title "Hot Vegan Guys" somehow caught my eye while I was on YouTube watching Joaquin Phoenix on The Late Show with Letterman. Joaquin seems to be following his brother River down an odd and life-ending path. I prefer the unedited version, but apparently CBS complained and it has been removed.

Jeff Capellini of WCBS in New York did a great write-up on it (“'Late Show' Marred By Bizarre Phoenix Interview”). Some of the comments by readers are interesting, others peculiar. I thought Dave was very gracious and then obviously grew frustrated as the interview went along, if you can call it that. In the end, though, Dave was still rather polite I thought, given the situation.

Someone close to Joaquin clearly needs to get a hold of him and his life. Time for some rehab. And yet, it was classic. It was great television and no matter what Dave may say, or Mr. Phoenix for that matter, it was a good interview.

Honoring Lincoln

A few days ago Jack Kemp wrote up a little essay titled “Honoring Lincoln” which every American should read.

My Hero of the Day

South Carolina’s governor — Mark Sanford — is challenging the Washington pork bill known as the stimulus package

A problem that was created by building up of too much debt will not be solved with yet more debt,” the gov said Sunday on CNN. “We’re moving precipitously close to what I would call a savior-based economy” something “you see in Russia or Venezuela or Zimbabwe or places like that where it matters not how good your product is to the consumer but what your political connection is to those in power.”

A lot of people who’ve made some very stupid decisions are being bailed out by the population at large,” he added.

Unfortunately, the end of the interview is problematic. He, too, may be tempted by federal dollars in the end. Senators Specter and Collins jumped ship and voted to pass the monstrosity.

Our Friend Mr. Frum

Selling out leaves one neocon poorer for ideas.”

So true. David Frum's interviews on major media outlets have really bothered me over the years. And that aversion to him and his just plain stupid ideas is well-founded. The New Republic has some reporting on a recent shindig at his house.

This prompted a quick search on Google, resulting in several hits on this punk. Daniel McCarthy has a great piece in The American Conservative from a year ago on his “anything to win” strategy. Why anyone still invites this guy around or accepts his invitations is beyond comprehension.

Looking Back on Black Jack

No, not our portly little actor friend Jack Black, who happens to be married to one of Charlie Haden's daughters. (Haden was born in Shenandoah, Iowa, where the subject of my interest in Black Jack lived before being sent off to war in France.)

Instead Black Jack was the nickname of General Pershing, leader of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I. While poking around on the Internet, I found an article on him and his book on the war, My Experiences in the World War, in TIME magazine. One thing I find rather cool is his modest gravestone at Arlington.

The “subject” I mentioned previously is Leslie Warren Darling, a young man when he died in France near a farm which served as a battlefield and then a field hospital. I am researching a book on him — his life and experiences.
