Ireland To Loosen Citizenship Rules for Americans

With the formerly highflying Irish economy now in an even deeper tailspin than the American one, the Irish prime minister’s annual St. Patrick’s Day visit to the United States has an unusually somber feel about it.

In a speech at the American Irish Historical Society in Manhattan, Prime Minister Brian Cowen of Ireland, in a move to woo Irish-Americans, proposed measures to make it easier for Americans to claim Irish citizenship, reversing a restrictive course the Irish government took in 2005.

The connections between Ireland and America remain strong,” Mr. Cowen said, “but we cannot take them for granted.”

Mr. Cowen was cheered Sunday, at least in some quarters, for his proposal to ease naturalization by allowing Americans whose nearest Irish ancestor is a great-grandparent to qualify for citizenship, provided that they have spent considerable time studying or working in Ireland. Under current law, the most distant forebear an American could claim and still qualify for Irish citizenship is a grandparent.

There’s an awful lot of Irish-Americans who feel very cut off by the ‘grandfather rule,’ ” said Niall O’Dowd, the former chairman of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform and a founder of the Irish Voice newspaper in New York as well as of the new web site, Irishcentral.com. “This would open up Irish citizenship to a whole new generation of Irish-Americans.”

The number of Americans with Irish ancestry has been estimated to be as high as 40 million, and millions of those people have no closer blood tie to Ireland than a great-grandparent.

The immigration proposal grew out of a “strategic review” of Irish-American relations Mr. Cowen ordered up last year, the first such review performed by the government since the 1930s, he said.

Of the loosened requirements for Irish citizenship, a Mr. Neely, who had a maternal great-grandfather born in Ireland, said, “I think I actually could take advantage of that. It’s not something I’ve ever thought about, but now that the opportunity could be available, I’ll think about it.”

"Scientists Claim Earth Is Undergoing Natural Climate Shift"

[I]f we don't understand what is natural, I don't think we can say much about what the humans are doing. So our interest is to understand -- first the natural variability of climate -- and then take it from there. So we were very excited when we realized a lot of changes in the past century from warmer to cooler and then back to warmer were all natural."

Dr. Anastasios Tsonis
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The bitter cold and record snowfalls from two wicked winters are causing people to ask if the global climate is truly changing.”

The climate is known to be variable and, in recent years, more scientific thought and research has been focused on the global temperature and how humanity might be influencing it.”

A new study by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee used a method known as synchronized chaos and applied it to climate data from the past 100 years.

Scientists said that the air and ocean systems are now showing signs of synchronizing.

Eventually, the systems may begin to couple and the synchronous state will be destroyed, leading to a climate shift.

In climate, when this happens, the climate state changes. You go from a cooling regime to a warming regime or a warming regime to a cooling regime. This way we were able to explain all the fluctuations in the global temperature trend in the past century,” Tsonis said. “The research team has found the warming trend of the past 30 years has stopped and in fact global temperatures have leveled off since 2001.”

The most recent climate shift probably occurred in the year 2000.

Tsonis said he thinks the current trend of steady or even cooling earth temps may last a couple of decades or until the next climate shift occurs.

Ron Silver (1946-2009)

Roger Friedman, entertainment reporter for Fox News, writes in his latest column about his friendship with Silver.

About ten days ago I wrote [...] about Ron’s great acting achievements. Of course, he first came to popularity acting with Valerie Harper and Julie Kavner in “Rhoda,” as their menschy neighbor, Gary. But very quickly he took off in movies, with such milestones as his performance in "Enemies: A Love Story", his wonderful portrayal of lawyer Alan Dershowitz in "Reversal of Fortune", and so many other films including "Garbo Talks", "Blue Steel", and "Ali". He was nominated twice for Emmy awards.

Ron was also an accomplished theater actor. His credits included the original Broadway cast of "HurlyBurly" (1984) with William Hurt, Judith Ivey, and Harvey Keitel. In 1986 he co-starred on Broadway with Marlo Thomas in the comedy "Social Security". And in 1988 he, Joe Mantegna and Madonna were the original cast of David Mamet’s “Speed the Plow.” Ron played Charlie Fox, the screenwriter with the idea who comes to Bobby Gould (Mantegna) for help. In all three plays, Ron secured his place as the “it” New York actor of his time, consummate, literate, dangerous and smart.

The smart was a good thing and a bad thing. In 1989, Ron helped found the Creative Coalition with Alec Baldwin, Ron Silver, Christopher Reeve, Susan Sarandon, Blair Brown and Stephen Collins. It only takes a second to realize this was a group of liberal minded actors, and Ron was part of them. But soon his politics turned conservative. In short order Ron started endorsing candidates like New York Republicans Rudolph Giuiliani and Alfonse D’Amato. This caused no end of headaches, discussions, debates, and fights. But it also made for a lively time.

I didn’t always agree with Ron politically, but it didn’t matter. He was a great friend, a great family man. He loved his kids. Whether we ran into each other at events or planned on seeing each other, we always had a great time talking Hollywood or chewing over Washington. Last August, Ron insisted on covering the Democratic convention in Denver for Sirius Radio. He was very weak, but he did it with gusto, running around the city getting interviews for his show. He could not be stopped, even though his daughter, Alex, and I, as well as his Sirius assistant, could see the strain.

Last week when I checked in with him, Ron’s voice sounded like a distant signal over a radio. Still, he was bouncy and ebullient. We talked about a lot of things including his radio show on Sirius, which was he was still doing once a week. He had an idea. “Why don’t we a whole show with gossip columnists?” he asked. I said, we’ll think about it. But he couldn’t stop thinking. He had a million ideas for shows, and I think would have had dozens more great performances in him as an actor. I’m not the only friend who will say this in coming days, but he will truly, always, be sorely missed and greatly remembered.

Steve Martin & His Play

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7944830.stm

Steve Martin has stepped in to support a school production of his play that was banned after parents objected to its adult themes.

Students at La Grande High School in Oregon were stopped from staging Picasso at the Lapin Agile.

Martin has offered to help pay for the play to be performed off-campus.

He said he was supporting the production because he did not want his play "acquiring a reputation it does not deserve".

"I'd pay to see that."

Cheney dismisses idea that Limbaugh is bad for GOP

Rush Limbaugh is not “kryptonite” for Republicans, the former vice president said.

Cheney calls Limbaugh "a good friend" who does great work and serves an important purpose.

Limbaugh has challenged President Barack Obama to a debate on issues facing the country. In an appearance Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union," Cheney smiled at the thought of a debate and declared, "I'd pay to see that."

A(nother) Disturbing Court Order

A judge in North Carolina, with nothing better to do than tell a mother how to parent, ordered her to stop home-schooling three children and re-enroll them at public school. Judge Ned Mangum is overseeing a divorce between the mother and father.

The father complained about his children being taught in a religious context.

Her lessons also have a religious slant, which the judge said was the root of the problem.”

In an affidavit, the father said he “objected to the children being removed from public school.”

Mother Venessa Mills has been teaching the kids herself for four years and with above average results.

They have tested two years above their grade levels, she said.”

She is involved with Sound Doctrine church, which advocates home schooling.

Muslim Takeover of Europe Progressing Nicely

CBN News has a disturbing report on the background of radical Muslims (and others) in Sweden. The “growing Muslim influence” in Malmö, Sweden has transformed the southernmost tip of the country.

I am writing about this because I happened across video of the punks on the streets causing havoc, all because some Israelis were playing tennis nearby, in a closed-off stadium due to the threats of violence.

Jews cannot walk the streets” and the number of rapes has tripled in 20 years. And, yet, the multiculturalists refuse to heed the warnings.

Malmö has been so accommodating toward immigrant Muslims that a local Muslim politician, Adly Abu Hajar, has declared that "The best Islamic state is Sweden!"

A few years ago, the left-leaning Guardian of London declared Sweden the most successful society the world has ever known.

Don't ask Malmö's Jews to give the city the same glowing assessment. Jews who dare walk the streets wearing their yarmulkes risk being beaten up.

It's true. Jews cannot walk the streets of Malmö and show that they're Jews,” Danish journalist Lars Hedegaard admitted.

Hedegaard lives in Copenhagen, where he was a columnist for one of Denmark's largest newspapers. He says pro-Israel demonstrations in Malmö, have been met with rocks, bottles and pipe bombs from Arabs and Leftists.

On Saturday when Israel played Sweden in a Davis cup tennis match in Malmö, an estimated 6,000 Leftists, Arabs, Muslims and anarchists protested the Israeli presence in the city, and hundreds attacked police. Almost no fans were allowed inside to watch the tennis series, because authorities feared disruptions or possible violence against the Israeli team.

Massive immigration has made Malmö today one quarter Muslim, and stands to transform it into a Muslim majority city within just a few decades. One of the most popular baby names is not Sven, but Mohammed.

But despite Malmö's usually placid appearance, this experiment in multiculturalism has not gone well. In the Rosengaard section of Malmö, a housing project made up primarily of immigrants, fire and emergency workers will no longer enter without police protection.

Unemployment in Rosengaard is reported to be 70 percent. An immigrant-fueled crime wave affects one of every three Malmö families each year.

"I was there for demonstration; a pro-Israeli demonstration with about 400 or 500 people," Hedegaard told CBN News. "Jews and non-Jews, and I came over to cover it. The police allowed, I'd say a hundred Palestinians or Arabs to shout and threaten and throw bombs and rockets at us. A homemade bomb landed about ten yards from me, and went off with a big bang. And now of course, I thought the police were going to jump these guys, get them out of the way. They didn't. They just let them stand there."

Swede Ted Ekeroth helped film the Arab-Left counter-demonstrations. He saw Arabs throwing rocks at a 90-year-old holocaust survivor.

"I filmed the police chief and asked him why are they not reacting to this," Ekeroth said. "Why are they not doing anything? And he simply answered, 'It's their right according to the Swedish constitution.' We apparently did not have the same right, because we were forced out of there. Our manifestation for Israel is always peaceful, and theirs is always the quite opposite -- Death, hate and killing of Jews. They come and they shout different slogans," he continued. "It can be everything from Arabic slogans inciting killing of Jews to in Swedish and Danish, 'Kill the Jews.'”

“Creativity Was Not Considered”

The Christian Science Monitor reports on more Dem propaganda about Rush.

Setting a world record today for beating a dead horse, the Democratic National Committee will announce they’ve selected an anti-Rush Limbaugh slogan to be placed on a billboard in the radio host’s hometown.

CNN is reporting that the billboard will say, “Americans didn’t vote for a Rush to failure.”

Apparently, more than 80,000 slogans were emailed in and astonishingly all were somehow deemed worse than that one.

CNN reported that it “will be splashed across a billboard in Limbaugh's hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida, and printed on T-shirts,” according to a DNC official, explaining that more than 50,000 people helped narrow the list to the top five.

Helped” is a very broad term. This is 50,000+ people who don't know much about sloganeering. I'd like to know what those remaining five were and what DNC idiots voted for this one.

It will be a nice day in America when most people realize just how vacuous Dems are.

Turning on Obama

Camille Paglia writes at Salon that the Obama White House is not being served well by those in his circle. “President Obama's clumsy, smirky staff is sinking him -- and resurrecting a deflated GOP!” And she argues that the Dems should “Lay off Rush!

Meanwhile, Howard Fineman of Newsweek comments on the “Establishment” turning on Obama. A very smug and arrogant Fineman was a recent guest on Olbermann's bizzaro Countdown show.

Time for the Deportations to Begin

Twice in two years they have fought in Iraq. Twelve of their regimental comrades paid the ultimate price there and in Afghanistan.

Over the past two years they have spent day after day patrolling hostile territory, where every passer-by could have a gun or a bomb.

So the 200 men of the 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment perhaps had a right to expect a heroes’ welcome yesterday on a homecoming parade...

Instead, they were faced with the hate-filled jeers of anti-war protesters waving placards saying: ‘Anglian soldiers: Butchers of Basra,’ and ‘Anglian soldiers: cowards, killers, extremists.’

There was a furious reaction from the hundreds lining the streets to support the soldiers – known as the Poachers. Shouting ‘scum’ and ‘no surrender to the Taliban’, they turned on the Muslim demonstrators.

Illegals Desperate for Work During Recession

A Home Depot in Palm Beach, Florida is having problems with some day-laborers (several in the country illegally) who are becoming increasingly aggressive while searching for work. They “swarm customers in bid for work.” Why aren't these men deported, especially during a recession when work for many citizens is so hard to find?

The Home Depot is not pleased. Blaming the job seekers for causing accidents and driving away customers, the world's largest home improvement retailer has been working to discourage them from rushing vehicles in the driveways and trespassing in the parking lot.

Gonzalo Garcia of Guatemala seems like a nice man, but he's here without permission.

Garcia, an undocumented Guatemalan national who had a regular job in construction until being laid off late last year, said he and the others only want to work and have no other way to find steady pay.

"We're not here because we want to be here," he said in Spanish. "We need to be."
