Anyone Know a Good Palm Reader?

Like always, scientists are mulling the future and without a clue.

Nine years of work disappeared in five minutes yesterday . . . Now climate scientists who worked on the ambitious effort to map the world's carbon dioxide are trying to figure out what comes next.”

'Day of Reckoning'

Despite his adoring fans in the media, Obama's day is coming.

While The New York Times and its global subsidiary the International Herald Tribune spin a nice tale of Obama's popularity, other news reports are emerging showing that the Obama juggernaut is beginning to slip.

A new Gallup poll has “Obama sinking” with worse numbers than Jimmy Carter at the same point in his first-and-only term.

It's been a steady decline, from 69 percent approval in late January to 66 percent, 63 percent, 62 percent and, now, 59 percent in recent weeks.”

Given his speech Tuesday night, the folks at Gallup note: “. . . He has a tremendous opportunity to convert Americans who are now on the fence — in addition to those who now disapprove of him — into supporters.”

Editors at the Kansas City Star have a sober, realistic take. “The bottom line: Obama has lost some of the luster he got with the exciting Inauguration Week. One speech won't get it back.”

Here are some choice quotes by delusional Democrats from interviews with Voice of America on the speech.

Democratic Congressman Jim Moran: “He is a president deserving of these times.” Is this a double entendre? “We are lucky to have him, but there is some real question in my mind as to whether the Congress is going to be deserving of his leadership. We're going to have to get our act together - particularly the Republican party. They need to do something more than just say 'no' to everything he proposes.” Basically this means: “Be bipartisan or things is gonna get nasty.”

Representative Neal Abercrombie of Hawaii: “He reaches the world, really. His sense of confidence and his ability to take that sense of confidence and extend it to his listening audience is second r probably commensurate to that of President Roosevelt [FDR].” I thought he was Lincoln.

Another Dem, Representative Gary Ackerman said: “Pitch, posture, politics, perfect. I've been to 26. It doesn't get much better than this.” We definitely need term limits. Can someone say “Been in Washington way too long”?

Sheila Jackson Lee really put the emphasis on the phrase Parliament of Whores. She was slumming around long before the speech. She wasn't just there to nab a good seat. Like any smart hooker, she wanted cold, hard cash.

And yet a few are skeptical, wary of excessive presidential power and questionable executive authority. Senator Robert Byrd sent a sort of reprimand to Obama in a letter. As the “historian of the Senate” and the longest-serving Democratic senator, Byrd criticized President Obama’s use of White House “czars” to oversee policy.

He specifically mentioned the creation of White House offices on health reform, urban affairs policy, and climate change. Such positions “can threaten the Constitutional system of checks and balances . . . White House staff have taken direction and control of programmatic areas that are the statutory responsibility of Senate-confirmed officials.”

Sadly since Byrd no longer chairs the powerful Appropriations Committee, his opining does not carry as much weight as before.

Just as Rick Santelli represented the “silent majority” on CNBC earlier in the week, people on Wall Street and Main Street don't trust Obama. There is little confidence in his rhetoric (“Stocks fall as Obama fails to deliver details”). Businessman Tim Smalls noted that housing data “is another dose of reality.”

Recently Catholic Archbishop of Denver Charles Chaput, while giving a lecture at St. Basil’s Church on the campus of the University of Toronto, warned that in the U.S., Catholics need to act on their faith and be on guard against “a spirit of adulation bordering on servility” towards Obama and his administration.

The crash is on its way and I don't mean an economic one. What happens when everyone realizes our president is another Jimmy Carter? Great at building houses, but lousy in the White House. Obama's “dire day of reckoning” will be here before long.

Another Day, Another Paper

Goodbye San Francisco! The Chronicle is in heap-big-trouble. Although the staff has a decidedly leftist bent, I enjoy the website and the design of the paper.

'Irresponsible'

“It's irresponsible,” Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, in response to Obama's speech tonight, said referring to the stimulus. It “grow the government, increase our taxes down the line, and saddle future generations with debt.”

The way to lead is not to raise taxes and put more money and power in hands of Washington politicians,” Jindal said.

Taking advantage of his moment in the national spotlight, Jindal publicized his own web presence, what may be the beginning of an increasingly linked and savvy opposition (and viable alternative) to the Democrats.

House Republican leader John Boehner said Obama's calls for fiscal responsibility is “all talk and no action” and typical of Washington.

The Weather & Footwear

I usually don't write or talk much about the weather. However, after some weeks with rather pleasant days, especially given Oregon's reputation, I and perhaps others became somewhat spoiled. Today that changed.

A strong system with plenty of steady, heavy rain eventually accompanied by impressive winds during the evening let loose as I headed out on some errands and to visit my grandmother. For some reason I decided to wear my Nike flip flops and my feet became progressively wetter and wetter and colder, too. Near Winco I broke down and went into Sportsmen's Warehouse intent on buying some waterproof boots of some kind.

The sales guy, really just a kid probably still in high school or just out of it (in more ways than one), didn't seem to know much. He said snow boots, high end and expensive ones, wouldn't last in rainy weather as they were made for snow and ice. Doesn't make much sense to me, but I didn't find much worth trying. Most of the boots were well out of my budget for the day and the shoes were mostly unimpressive.

Yet, I did find some light, airy walking shoes for about $30 made by Columbia. This particular model was on sale, but the sales kid reported back only having certain sizes. So I have a slightly-too-large pair. Of course, it's not a problem for me as I like big shoes. I don't like my feet being crowded. I like a little room. This pair isn't as comfortable as other cheaper brands I have used. Perhaps they just need to be broken in a bit. We will see.

A Dollar Is A Dollar (Or, In This Case, $250,000)

The state of Washington sent out $1 checks to the 250,000 people as part of the food stamp program. Genius Leo Ribas, says the $1 check is a one-time move and that next year the state will be able to trigger the federal assistance through a routine deposit into food stamp accounts. Check out his title: director of the Community Services Division for the Department of Social and Health Services.

Too Little, Too Late

In a seemingly juvenile political ploy, President Obama criticized the military program working on the replacement helicopter fleet for Marine One. The irony is about the size of Mars, given his lack of courage and utter disregard for responsibility on the multitude of pork in the stimulus package.

$1 Billion for Gaza . . . and Hamas

Spiraling out of control and spending money much like teenagers at the mall on spring break, Hillary and the Obama White House have promised nearly $1 billion to Gaza, which is controlled by the terrorist group Hamas. I have a feeling conservatives will be back in power before we even know it. I certainly hope so. (And hopefully they have learned a few lessons along the way.) Enough already! The revolution is coming.

Santelli Challenges White House Attacks

Rick Santelli was on The Dennis Miller Show today and has regained some of the steam he had after his so-called “rant” on CNBC. He really laid into White House Press Secretary Gibbs and it was oh-so-nice to hear. It should be available as a podcast download for free later in the day on iTunes or directly from Miller's site.

Does Anyone Actually Watch 'The View'?

This show was so old five years ago, yet the psychobabble continues. How does one explain it? Well, let's face it, there are plenty of stupid women roaming the streets of America who think it is da bomb. They should either be deported or executed. I will be probing The View's ratings and what some of the psycho-chicks in the viewership have to say.

White House Dismisses Criticism of Plan

The White House responded to CNBC reporter Rick Santelli who apparently “doesn't know what he's talking about.” So much for listening to the man on the street.

Obama's press secretary Robert Gibbs “poked fun at Santelli” and invited him to the White House to read and discuss the bailout plan. “I'd be happy to buy him a cup of coffee,” Gibbs said. “Decaf.”

Santelli accepted the offer. “I think this is terrific that this has been opened up to national debate,” Santelli said in an MSNBC interview. “I think it's wonderful he invited to me to the White House. I'm really not big on decaf, though. I think I'd prefer tea.”

Gibbs did acknowledge that “there will be people that made bad decisions that in some ways will get help,” but are not the focus, he claimed. “I also think it's tremendously important that for people who rant on cable television to be responsible and understand what it is they're talking about,” he said.

We are not stupid, Gibbs. Santelli is one of the few journalists who is actually doing his job rather than merely adoring your boss day-in-and-day-out. We understand. We are responsible. We simply disagree.

For more details read these stories: “White House objects to 'rant' on its housing plan” and “White House blasts reporter's 'rant'”.

The original video of Santelli challenging the insanity is here. Talking Points Memo has a video, “Rick Santelli vs. Robert Gibbs”.
